The weather starts to get a little chillier, the leaves start to get a little browner and the days start to get longer. For many people, this signals the time of year when, after a fast-paced summer, they slow down and stay indoors. But fall doesn’t have to be the annual comedown that it so often is – there are plenty of exciting activities that suit themselves to the autumn months.
This article will focus on three activities, attempting to cover three separate bases: firstly, you want your “hobby” activity, something fun that you can do often; then you want your “one-time”, memorable activity, something you can put in a scrapbook one day; and finally, you want your extreme, “only for the bold” activity. Together, these make your “need to try” fall activities. This year, when September 22nd rolls around, don’t fall into autumn inactivity – get out there and try one of the following.
Axe Throwing
This is your hobby activity – something you can do week after week without tiring of it. Axe throwing is a relatively new activity, has gained massive popularity over the past few years, and if you haven’t tried it you’re missing out. It’s basically what you think it would be: you throw axes at a wooden target, aiming to hit a bullseye. From this simple premise, leagues have formed and international tournaments have been held, which should be some indication of how addicting and fun this sport can be. You obviously don’t have to enrol in a tournament to get in on the fun though – even if you were to just try axe throwing with your friends on a lazy weekend sometime, you’ll see what all the fuss is about.
Why It’s Perfect For Autumn: It’s outdoorsy without actually being outdoors. Plus, you can wear your best fall flannel to an axe-throwing facility and not look out of place!
Ballooning
This is your one-time, memorable activity, and it lends itself particularly well to take photos. If you are someone who, after a hectic summer, is craving some peace and quiet, hot air ballooning is definitely for you. When you’ve reached your final altitude and your pilot shuts off the burners, you’ll see why this is such a special experience – the dramatic panorama, the astounding silence and stillness is all so breathtaking.
Why It’s Perfect For Autumn: From up high, the fall colours look particularly gorgeous, and the relatively temperate climate suits itself to be up to the air.
Spelunking
Only for the brave, this is your extreme fall activity. If unfamiliar, spelunking (also known as caving) is the recreation activity of exploring wild caves. There is a lot of special equipment involved –hardhats with headlamps, wetsuits, boot, etc. – and there are safety precautions that should be followed, so it’s best to go spelunking on a guided cave tour. You might need to take a course beforehand, but it’s worth it for the astounding scenery and eerie ambience.
Why It’s Perfect For Autumn: Trying this popular activity in the shoulder season (as opposed to high season) means you won’t be competing with many other adventurers for space.
What are you waiting for? Start planning your fall now, and make sure to include these three exciting activities.
