My husband's latest assignment with The American Family Association has been to develop a homeschool internet television channel. It's much more than that, though. Bringing film from homeschool and family conferences across the country, it also has great homeschool bloggers like Kimberly from Raising Olives, forums for each state, opportunities to interact with others on the website and much more. Find out about this wonderful new resource by going to thehomeschoolchannel.tv. I believe it's not a lost cause and that we can teach our children to be courteous and respectful. Our sons are taught to open doors for ladies and pull out their chair and seat them and other such things and our girls to show respect to the guys that do so and to receive these acts. I was just wondering about your take on chivalry. Long story and I have posted here for prayer before but she has a head injury from deployment to Iraq. No one in the military seems to know how to help and they are treating her like dirt. They aren't listening to her and are not bring sensitive to her needs. They just want her back to work. They are not wanting to help her get better they keep telling her to adjust to the headache and deal with it.Anyway, she has an appointment today with a new doctor. We need a miracle! A kind compassionate doctor that will do what is best for Erin and not the army. Would you pray please?! She is very scared that they are going to force her back to work and not give her the time that she needs to heal.

I love reading about "large families," i'm not sure why. I don't at this time feel called to have one, but I do feel I should "take it one baby at a time" and not do anything final in saying I'll never have more than 3 kids.
But I remarked to my husband today that I've realized that even if we don't ever have more kids, I don't want the reason for that to be that we "can't have any more kids because we can barely handle the ones we've got!" Let me explain...
Kim, I believe your oldests are girls? My oldest is our only boy. He is almost 7 and in first grade. I don't know if it's a "boy thing" or a personality issue, but it has always been like pulling teeth to get him to be self sufficient, at any stage. He would've let us spoon feed him and dress him far beyond toddlerhood if we'd let him. He was the hardest and latest to potty train. Currently we've finally learned to buckle our own seatbelt and brush our own teeth, but tying shoes is way over his head, he struggles with learning to read (maybe I should say he struggles with wanting to practice learning to read, he CAN read if he tries), he forgets to help his sisters, even getting out the door is hard, he just stands there until I tell him to open it and exactly what to do, etc. etc. He tries to be responsible, and tries to remember my "rules" and such, but he seems to me kinda immature for his age?
I have 2 young daughters, the youngest of which should count as a dozen kids by herself, lol, so I could really use my oldest to be more of a helper instead of an avoider. What am I doing wrong? What ages did you start "chores" and what were they? How did you get your kids to do them? What sort of independence levels can I expect of a 6.5 year old boy? His 4 year old sister attempts to follow his lazy lead and what with the "difficult" toddler, I feel like I'm herding THREE babies sometimes instead of a 2, 4 and 6 year old.
My other issue with being any bigger than a family of 5 is my youngest daughter. She will be 2 in a few weeks. Since birth she has been a terror and complete wet-blanket for everybody. Our older two kids are SO easygoing and fun (and get along together great too), this youngest has just about killed us. I could have a BUNCH of kids if they were like my older 2 personality-wise, but my third has really worn us out and we don't feel like we can keep up with teaching the older two (not to mention the youngest) as we should be. It seems she's knocked us totally off track and we don't know how to get back on. Any spare moment we have we just want quiet and rest instead of doing any teaching, discipline, or fun. Anyone else experience a similar situation? How did you survive a "difficult" kid and still enjoy family life without her making every single thing harder than it ever was before?
Anybody have any advice or tips? These things, along with that we just bought an 1100 sq ft house on a ministry budget and don't have big enough rooms for any more kids, make me scared to have another child. But I keep reading your all's blogs anyway ;)

I'm thinking the coffee house messed up my decaf order at 8 tonight and I'm terribly sensitive to caffeine.
Anyway, I'm wondering about this witch of Endor business in I Samuel 28. I've always thought the orthodox interpretation of this passage was that the woman was not really a medium and that the spirit she conjured up was a demon, not Samuel. But, I never noticed before that after saying Saul "perceived" that the spirit was Samuel, verses 15 and 16 go on to say "Samuel said" such and such, which he really had said. It's not just the problem of a medium, but also that Samuel "came up" not down suggesting he was in hell, and that he says that tomorrow Saul and his sons would join him. Join him in hell? Join him in heaven? It doesn't seem like Saul and Samuel, or Jonathan for that matter, would be going to the same place. Join him in death? That would make more sense, but I still have a problem with Samuel coming "up". Is this figurative language? If it's a demon why does the inspired Word of God refer to it as Samuel twice instead of the spirit that looked like Samuel. And this is a really minor point, but I went through Randy Alcorn's book and study on Heaven a couple of years ago and had a hard time about what age we will be when we have our resurrection bodies. I don't know about you, but I'm already looking forward to turning back the clock and was quite depressed that Samuel, if indeed it was Samuel, looked old. Is this so he would be recognized? Is this because it was his intermediate body and not his resurrected body?
Now you see why I can't sleep. Caffeine makes my mind rev while my body craves sleep. I apologize for any weirdness in this post that goes beyond my normal weirdness.

Making a Blog Badge and New Photo Header

I don't have many people in my world that care about this, so I decided to come over here just b/c I am DOING THE HAPPY DANCE! Right now, I have 3 kids at varying ages and abilities who can help. They are 4, 9, and 13. Currently, 13yo does breakfast, 9yo does lunch, and they both rotate evenings for dinner.
But it's gotta change. I'm getting way too much "that was her pan, and she didn't do it" or "those cups are leftover from breakfast." Or sometimes we're gone all day so maybe there wasn't a meal, but there are still various dirty dishes. Anyway, there's too much confusion. I've said over and over that the dishes don't have names, but I also felt that if one girl didn't finish her job, it's not right for the other to do it. But I also don't want both of them in the kitchen doing their stack of dishes, etc., etc.
I don't like having to make decisions over and over on something that should already be settled. So, I'm looking for a better way. I've considered just putting 13yo in charge of kitchen duties, and giving 9yo other various housework duties.
I'd love to know what other families are doing!

TODAY! I love using buttermilk for biscuits, pancakes, ranch dressing, cole slaw dressing, etc... and after reading up some more on its goodness in Nourishing Traditions, I was wondering about why they tell you to start with a special starter and then go on to replenish on your own the way you describe.
I have wondered for some weeks why I couldn't just start with some good buttermilk...
My main, and rather simple, question is this- does is matter what kind of milk is used? The buttemilk I buy regularly says it's made with 1% milkfat but we always buy whole milk. Do you know if it matters? Would buttermilk made with whole milk just end up a bit richer? I can't imagine that would be a bad thing... but I could be missing something, lol!
I am excited to start making my own buttermilk and just save a bit on a regular item we consume. It will be so much easier to always have some on hand if I can just start some more every time it gets a week old, maybe have a regular buttermilk starting day each week, hmmm, now my wheels are turning...

My sister is an active military soldier and stationed in LA. She was rear ended on Christmas Day and suffered a concusion. She is still having MAJOR complications from this event and is needing prayer. The army has been dragging their feet with her treatment and have just sent her to bed and left her there for the past 9 days. My parents are traveling to bring her home and now the army doesn't want to grant her leave. They want to send her to TX for treatment. She can't drive, cook, or clean and they are wanting to send her even farther from family by herself for treatment. She is pleading with her Commander to grant her leave to come for treatment but he is not yeilding. Please pray that God will move in his heart and the hearts of all involved to allow us to bring this girl home for treatment and care.
It would mean so much to me if you all would take the time to pray. She is in tons of pain of is still not keeping food down and this has been going on since Christmas Day. He has spent the last year filming new content and contracting with other family media entities (Vision Forum, Franklin Springs) to bring encouragement to homeschooling families across the globe. Right now he is looking for homeschool bloggers (moms, dads or mature young adults) to post on the website. Please tell me your favorite homeschool blogger and give me a link to their blog, please. I'm writing a mini-series of posts on being resolved, starting with Jonathan Edwards and his famous resolutions. I was inspired and challenged by Steve Lawson's book The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards and will post on his resolutions and then make a few of my own. As a Christian, I think it's important to have resolutions, but I need to take mine more seriously. It also should be a continuous process of self-examination, not just an annual joke at trying to improve myself. I hope that after my series I'll be better able to make a few realistic resolutions that will bring me closer in my walk with Christ to the glory of God.
