We had 2 daughters in the PICU this past September, both for 7 nights... they have asthma and managed to catch a nasty case of RSV which progressed to pneumonia for both of them... they were on continuous albuterol and 8-10 liters of 100% oxygen for most of that time, it was crazy, and we were told that not too long ago, before they started the continuous albuterol, at least one of the girls would've ended up on a respirator- that was scary.
I don't think I'll ever forget the sinking feeling as our pediatrician at our local hospital said "your daughter is very sick, there's nothing more we can do here, we need to transfer her to Children's, and they may need to intubate her soon..." and then the next morning, the same thing with another daughter (our 6 yr old first and thenn our 4 yr old)
Crazy times, but Children's was incredible! The pulmonologists we see at Children's Respiratory and Critical Care Specialists were right there and checking in at least once a day, conferencing with the docs and nurses and therapists, etc... and since the girls had RSV and couldn't go to the activity room, they brought everything to their rooms! Games, puzzles, paints, craft projects, stickers, beads to make necklaces, plants to pot, it was amazing!
It was a long week, but all in all, a great place to spend it if you have a sick kid!
