Day 21 - Breathe Life into an Old Post

Started by Nirvana Mamma , author of nirvanamamma.com: 8/8/2010 1:43:20 AM

We’re still trucking along, and even though a few of us are a bit behind (not me, of course!), we’re learning a ton, right?  There’s so much amazing info packed into this groovy little ebook, that I’m sure we’re all going to have to read it again to really absorb it all, anyway.

Key Concepts

When updating an old post, if it’s a significant change, write a new post. Be sure to link back to the old post so readers know it’s been updated.

7 ways to update a post (I’m going to look at this list every time I post)

  1. Crafting your post title – Shouldn’t suck
  2. Opening lines – Must be enticing
  3. Call to Action – Get readers to do something
  4. Add Depth – Illustrations, examples, etc.
  5. Quality control – Proofread, old links, inaccurate?
  6. Polishing Posts – Great looking posts do better
  7. Conversation – Readers continue to interact with old posts

Questions

  1. By reviewing my old posts, this exercise helped me figure out where I need to improve as a blogger.  When reviewing your old posts, did a majority of the posts fall into any of the 7 categories above?
  2. Which post did you choose to rewrite and why?

  1.  For me, adding depth and quality control were my biggest issues.
  2. There is one piece I need to re-write about pinging.  Some of the comments from readers showed me that I left out some key information about Feedburner and Wordpress.com capabilities.   I also realized by researching some more, that the information in the post is a bit inaccurate.  Oooops!  Learned my lesson on that one.

I am taking a few posts from my old cooking blog and reworking them for the new one. I am even going to take new photos for a couple of them. I'm *definitely* going to polish the writing and give them new titles.

And yes, this challenge is FULL of great things to improve my blog. I confess I didn't buy the e-book yet (I'm at the end of a two-month furlough and won't get paid until September 1), but I plan to do it as soon as the cashflow is back.

1.  I think my biggest issue is the call to action.  If nothing else I'd like to get readers to leave a comment!  :)

2.  I'm choosing to rewrite my post Video Killed the Lazy Mom.  It's from May (which in bloggy time is like years ago!) and I continue to get a lot of hits on this post.  But, I have only one comment.  Hmmn... I think I need to add some pics and spruce it up a bit.

I agree Melissa, I think the call to action part is quite hard. I've just created a weekly email update, but I am always forgetting to tell people about it, and I feel a bit weird promoting it and asking people to sign up.

I had a go at updating this post: http://makenart.blogspot.com/2010/07/sketchbook-project-day-1.html because I realised it was getting a lot of traffic for the search term 'Sketchbook Project' and I wanted to make sure people who landed on that page were also aware I'd been doing some testing of the sketchbook paper to try and help them with their own books.

I'm one of those people who hates looking back, I prefer to learn from past mistakes and try to improve from them in the future! This task is a little uncomfortable for me, but oh so necessary!

My headlines are generally good, but the opening lines and depth weren't at the forefront of my mind when I started blogging 2 months ago.

2. Which post did you choose to rewrite and why?

I changed some elements in my post:

When They Just Want To Rip Up Their Maths Homework!

i changed the opening lines and spaced out the formatting. I also changed the title in my wordpress dashboard from the SEO inspired "Maths Homework Help" to the current title, to encourage people to click on it in the popular posts sidebar.

  2. Which post did you choose to rewrite and why? I haven't done it yet but I am going to work on this today. I actually spent half the night last night (til 3 am this morning) breathing life back into another blog lol.One of my blogs was just boring so I revamped it and made new graphics and totally redoing the whole thing. I picked one of my favorite posts and updated it with pictures and different formatting.  (things I have learned about the last few weeks)  I also changed the title and the opening line.  I added questions at the end to generate comments.

I am excited to see the response it gets!

I went back and looked...I have a couple that could be reworked. I would like to improve Call to Action & Conversation in some of these older posts.

Questions: I only have about 50 posts under my belt so I'm wondering if my efforts could be better used for current material?

When I post past links into my new material - I will be sure to look it over and revise if necessary. Also, once I have more material posted I will do a "best of" series and repost (& update if needed).

One of mu goals down the road is to maybe introduce a seperate "sister blog" to Sunny Bug - if/when I do this, I may borrow old posts and completely re-work them for the new site. That is some time down the road though...

My latest post - Gone Bananas - has a great banana bread recipe!

I just came back from the BlogHer conference and several sessions there also emphasized the "call to action" which I previously neglected. I'm going to try to use it more!

I could go one editing indefinitely. I write in stolen moments of the day. Which means I should probably be sleeping or doing launddry.  Which also means I am either exhausted or in a rush, and not at my brilliant best.  So yes I imagine every one of my posts would fall into the above criteria.

I did remodel a post about my Anger Management Class for parents.  And now plan to tackle the other two in the series.  The link button does not like me this morning so we're doing it the old fashioned way sorry!
