Stepping in the foster care direction

Hi everyone!

We're about to turn in our applications to our local "childrens' home" to become a Family Friend. This would mean that a child or sibling group would be able to come stay at our house two weekends a month, come over for supper, we'd go to their school to eat lunch with them, go to their games, etc.. and just be a big support to their lives in partnership with the group home.

I'm picking up a little girl tomorrow that we're hoping will be elligible for the program by the time our paperwork and home check and such is finished. Right now, we can just be her "friend" meaning she can come play here and there, spend time with us, but not stay the night or anything like that.

I blogged about my feelings about this whole thing today... I'm nervous, excited, and even struggling with some serious sadness for her b/c I am aware of why she's there. :(

I couldn't go into a lot of detail on my blog, or here, but I just am looking for some support I guess. I don't know what this could turn into in the future, but I'm hoping that we'll start with this, and move right on to going through the DHS foster care program. Our youngest is only 2yrs old, so I'm wanting him to be older and a little easier before we try to do 'real' foster care.. but I'm excited to be taking this small step in that direction!

I think it's wonderful that you and your husband are doing this!  We have 5 kids, our fourth we adopted from Kazakhstan, and we would love to adopt again.  We're thinking we'll probably wait until we're sure we're through having kids before adopting again.  I'd also like our son we adopted to be old enough to understand and appreciate God's hand in the process.

Best of luck to you!

Hey!  I know you posted this a long time ago, but I thought I'd respond anyway!  That sounds like such a cool program!  I'm not aware of any like that in our area, but what a neat idea!  My husband and I are foster parents, and we advocate for it everywhere we go!  :)  We blog about our experiences as foster parents at  http://the-popps.blogspot.com   - come by if you're interested!

How wonderful! I've never even heard of a program like that. But it sounds like a perfect way to move towards becoming foster parents.

All the best!
