I went to a public school and had some great experiences. Where we live now doesn't have the greatest public schools and it is going futher down hill as we speak. When I have children I would either like to send them to a private school is money is available, or homeschool them.

Before I became a SAHM I was a middle school teacher at a school of choice (much different than charter school in my state). I loved my school but I do NOT love public schools here.   My daughter is 4 and I am leaning heavily on homeschooling. There are no charter schools in my town and the private schools are so-so and not necessarily the religion of my choice (and research shows that private school test scores aren't much better than public schools. What's up with that!?).   So, all I can say is right now I'm pretty sure that I'll do the bulk of the content teaching but will likely pair that with bi-weekly drop-ins in our neighborhood school for "specials" classes like music, physical ed, art, etc. If you don't know it, most states mandate that since you pay taxes, the school district must work with you if you want to homeschool part time and have your kids in public school (or athletics) part time.

I think that all forms can be positive experiences, but there are downfalls to all of them as well. I also think that our attitudes will create how we experience our surroundings to a certain point. All in all, I think as parents, we always give our children the education that suites them best. I don't think there is any one right or wrong answer, it is custom to our family needs.

I went to public school and then for high school I wanted to go to a private school. It really depends where we are living when my kids start to be that age of going to kindergarden and such. Right now my oldest is just 3 and she goes to a nursery school for preschool. My husband and I would love to send them to a private school but finding one that is actually worth the monet is kindda tough. We live near a great school district so I'm not against just sending them to public school if we happen to move into that area. Where we are now, has a pretty average school district so we're still not sure to be honest. lol I "home-schooled my preschool up until she started school... never questioned my decision and very proud of her knowing so much before she was even taught it in preschool. :)

My kids went to public school for several years but about 3 years ago I changed them to a private school. I think the biggest difference in my opinion is the size of the classroom. My kids had great teachers (mostly) in the public school but when there are 25-30 kids in a class I don't know how any of them teach! It is such a hard job that I watch many family members try and pull off! My kids test scores went up tremendously in private school. I can afford it right now, but there have been times before and maybe someday again that I won't. After seeing the difference I would consider home school. There are several parents at our private school that get assistance to help pay for it or work helping in the school to lower the cost. I admire these people. The economy is so hard right now.I don't think there is one right answer for everyone. It depends on the student, the school options etc. I think my kids would have done fine in the public school but I would have to invest a lot more time at home after school (in addition to reading with 5 kids, lessons, and homework) making sure they weren't left behind. Even if I did notice I STINK at math and couldn't teach them if my life depended on it :) So in that case, ANY school is better than my homeschool would be! Good luck!

Our 2 oldest are in public school and my little one will be as well when he hits the proper age. We have awesome schools where we live, and though nothing is perfect, no school is. For me, I find that what matters most isn't where they go to school but how things are handled at home. Our kids may face different challenges with children being in public school than a home-schooled child, but I feel we're equipping them early to handle ppl with different morals than we have. I think all choices are just fine as long as it is handled well by the parents.

I am currently homeschooling. My kids have done both, but I must admit, aside from them missing their friends, they all prefer being taught at home. (I think because we have way more fun and a lot more hands-on)
Originally, I brought the kids home with me because our public school was failing miserably at accomodating any children with special needs and I knew I could do a better job focusing on my kids strengths.
I did work at a special needs school as an aid to autistic teens and went to college for education, so it's up my alley to teach and I love the Montessori techniques. (but can never afford their programs)
I don't think we will ever go back!

I too attended all types of schools, from public to Catholic private to French system. I must say even though all have the advantages and disadvantages If I had the opportunity I would have my daughter in the French System. It is pretty tough, but it prepares you extremely well to college and life in general. Right now she is in a public school and I could not be happier nor could she!
