Do your children help you cook?

I have always encouraged my daughter to cook with me.  We've had great times together in the kitchen.  Now that she is 16, I am reaping the reward of my patient teaching!

Yup!  Mine do.  It is such a good skill for all kids to learn.  So many young adults these days leave home to live on their own and are woefully unprepared in life skills.

All the time! It's great now that my older kids are teens, because they sometimes cook for me! My little girls are in a cooking class at church. It's so much fun!

Mine "help" but in the end it usually angers me because I have double the amount of clean up duty! How do you learn to let go and enjoy being in the moment instead of dreading what's to come in the end? Am I horrible for admitting this?

Miss J sure does help me.  She's only 8, but she can cook a few items on her own (with a little supervision, of course).

Yep. In fact, my 13, 10, and 8 year old each have a night during the week that they are in charge of cooking dinner. For my older girls, this is a "night off" for me, but for my 8 year old son, it's "cooking lessons" for him.

My 4 year old son already knows how to make scrambled eggs on his own. With me standing by, of course.  My older girls have been cooking for so long that they can make quite gourmet dishes. I'll start my 6 year old on lessons soon, too. My kids all love it, and I never have to worry about when I leave town. We are a family of cooks. :)

My son just turned 5 and he has been helping me cook since he was 18 months old.  I am a former family and consumer science teacher and I believe if you start them young it will just come as second nature to them.  We spend a lot of time together cooking!

I need to get more relaxed when my girls "help" in the kitchen. I tend to cringe when they spill and make messes and I can feel the stress building inside me. (My girls are 2 and 4 right now.)

One thing I have that really helps me relax is this kitchen helper safety stand so that they can reach the counter without falling off a chair. (We sell them at one of our online stores

Thank you all for the reminder of the rewards if I keep with it and try to relax and have them help.

I don't have any kids yet, but if I did I would DEFINITELY let them help us cook!

My kids pull up a kitchen chair and stand by and add ingredients and help stir.  I guess I better get them going on other things too.  I guess my 7 year old is getting old enough to do that.  They are really good at making their own sandwiches which I thought was great but I will really start including them more.  I bought my 7 year old niece the "Princess and the Frog"  cookbook for Christmas and she LOVES it so we might need to invest in more kids friendly cookbooks.  I think I have one from Rachael Ray I just need to get it out more often.

My 2 year old loves to help mix ingredients together, and dump dry ingredients into the bowl. I'm hoping that if I keep letting him help, he'll learn to love cooking.
