The Sonlight Series on my blog deserves a more interactive atmosphere, so I'm taking the discussion here if you'd like to join in!

Got questions?  Ask away!  If I can't answer, then I am sure someone here can!

We started using Sonlight this year too.  After my second set of twins were born, I realized I didn't have the time to create my own curriculum anymore.  Sonlight has been a perfect fit for us!  I just wish it wasn't so expensive...

Yes, the cost is a bit overwhelming at times.  I do like; however, that I don't have to find all the books myself...they're all right there!

We loved the literature in Sonlight when we used it. We own Core K-2. What kept us from using it in the future was the expense AND that I couldnt see how to combine my children who are so close in age but not close enough to share a core. They are 8, 7, 4,2, and 1.  And I didnt want to do two cores. LOL. We are using My Fathers World which so far has great literature, hands on ideas that I was always adding into Sonlight and is much cheaper because one Year combines Music, Science, Lit, History/Geography and Bible then you have a book list to fill in additional Readers and Read Alouds bringing the cost down by  nearly half!. :) Which is a major reason for our switch that and its laid out nicely because each "grid" schedule is followed by all the discussion quesitons and teachers notes, no flipping back and forth. And Maps ect are printed in the back and the recommend you print them out ahead of time for your map work. With SL I was constantly printing maps because the children LOVE To color them and lable. :) Anyway I feel I have the best of both world.

Vicki,
I could not decide between MWF and Sonlight in the beginning.  What ended up pushing my decision closer to Sonlight was that I was able to get all the books w/ the curriculum and not have to chase after books at the library while chasing after 5 children.

It probably sounds really um...petty...but I needed the ease and peace that comes from having everything right here.

However, I am thrilled you've found something fits so well for your family.  (Any chances YOU'LL be doing a series on it? hint hint)

Hmm.. I'll have to consider that. ;) I agree that having all the books at home was  a pull toward Sonlight for us too. But then I found that I didnt like some of the books. LOL! There I was tweaking. And then I saw the dollar sign behind each book we chose not to use. LOL. But In SL defense it was early cores which lean heavily on those awful Usborn's. Darn that Charlotte Mason for telling me about living books and spoiling me on them. :) Of course MFW uses them too but not nearly as many so I can stomach it. :) Now I'll have to think about a series on MFW.. Actually I need to organize my blog a bit, its a mess. Ooops. OT.

I appreciate the comparisons between MFW and SL - I am actually leaving MFW to start SL next year.  My reasons for leaving are the fact that my library has very few of the reccommended books, we never do the assigned hands-on activities anyway (the boys always come up with their own, so we follow their interest), and it really isn't literature-based with living books, or at least not as much as we would like. There is one main "living book" read-aloud, the rest of the read-alouds are more non-fiction and dry, which don't hold the attention of my boys well.  I've ended up adding on two extra read-aloud times to include more living books.

I do think MFW is a good program, it just doesn't quite "fit" us like I had hoped (I've used it K-3rd).  I'm hoping SL will be a much better fit!

I hope so too, Erin.  It sounds like from what you've said here that SL may just be what you are looking for.

Thanks for doing this! After 2 years of thinking about it, I've decided to purchase Sonlight! I was afraid of 1) the cost, and 2) the amount of uninterrupted time needed. But Kimberly over at Raising Olives really pushed me to the decision when talking about teaching multiple children and NO preparation! I've got 2 girls, 9 and 13, and 2 boys, 1 and 4. Teaching multiples was the biggie, and having all the books shipped to my front door was the other. Sold!

So I'm ordering Core 5, because it's an area we haven't really delved into, and because I didn't want to go too low or too high for either girl. I might have to tweak it a little, but we'll see when it gets here.

I'm very excited about it, and the girls are, too! I look forward to more discussion here.
