Tell Me About Your Diet (or 'Lifestyle')

Started by Lyn , author of Escape from Obesity 7/7/2011 10:03:20 AM

There are so many ways to lose weight and be healthier! I know many people do not like to call their eating change a "diet," but I do. For me, losing weight is not something I plan to do forever... maintenance is. My 'diet' right now is Medifast. When I get to my goal I will switch back to eating whole foods.

What about you? What method are you using to lose weight? Do you count calories? Exercise? Weight Watchers? How successful do you feel your method is (for you)? Please share.

Good Afternoon!

I lost my weight by using Medifast, this lifestyle change was just what I needed!  I started May 10th 2010 at 5'7" and 273 lbs, wearing a too tight size 22 jean and 3X tops, at age 46 yrs old I hated everything about "me".  Then April 23rd 2010, I finally found a Dr. that understood and "got" what I was feeling.  By talking with my new dr I found that I qualified for Bariatric Surgery and thank god everyday that my insurance refused to pay for surgery.   The Dr he sent me to allowed me to try Medifast, even though he only used Medifast to get patients in a safe range for surgery.  This Dr decided that I was ready and I need help and support.  In 10 months and 1 day I hit my goal which was 12 lbs lower then weight the dr recommended but he was definitey OK with it.  On March 11th 2011, I weighed 150 lbs, just the number I had always wanted to be! I started maintenance or transitioning and lost another 5 lbs.  I am now maintaining at 145 lbs and could not be happier.  I finally like ME!  I wear clothes I would have never dreamed I would ever be able to wear!  I have not exercised at all to date (7/7/11)  I never did much for exercise and definitely never an athelete.  I do not have any problems with the dreaded extra skin that so many have trouble with or fear.  Medifast just totally worked for me in ever aspect!  I now wear a size 7 jr jean and a s-m jr tops!  Anytime I feel like a cheat I take a good look in the mirror and a peek at my before picture and yup the cheating feeling goes right away!!  I did this for me and anyone out there that feels the way I did needs to do this for themselves...you just have to realize you are worth it and deserve it!!

I used Weight Watchers to lose 80 pounds.  It took me 3 years- but it was the right program for me.  I had some freedom with the foods I could eat- while having some restriction and controls in place by being limited to a certain number of points. I also found the meetings we had once a week to be helpful.  Being accountable to the scale each week help me stay motivated and focused. (most of the time) :)  I still struggle with maintenance.  I recently had put 10 pounds back on and started to panic.  I needed a change from WW and have been following The 17 Day Diet.  The 10 pounds are gone and I am really enjoying this plan.  I also discovered a love of exercise.  At first I exercised so I could eat more food.  As exercise became a habit- I started loving it more and more.  Let me be clear about something... I have grown up LOATHING exercise.  It was not until I found activities that I enjoyed that I was able to turn it into a passion.  I think that is the trick to exercise.  Find what you love and then you will want to do it.  Exercise is also like therapy for me.  I sweat the stress out.  I am currently trying to find a way to live my life not so obsessed about food and calories.  I don't want to journal what I eat for the rest of my life.  I have considered reading the book Intuitive Eating and trying that, but to be honest, I am afraid.  I don't feel like I am ready to only listen to my body for true hunger.  I am an emotional eater and I still struggle with fighting the urge to binge.  I have fewer slip ups than in the past- but just don't quite trust myself yet.  I am working on that part of the journey right now.  I look forward to hearing how other people have lost their weight and where they are in their journey!!!

You know what I love?? I LOVE that you guys, and so many others, lost the weight and changed your lives on your own terms, with a program of your choosing, even switching plans when necessary. I love that there is not one way to lose weight in a healthy manner, but countless ways! There is a way for every person with every challenge, every family type, every athletic ability (or not), every personality, to lose weight. So many different plans WORK if you work them!

Losing weight is such a personal thing. I started this thread to encourage people to share what they are doing and what works/didn't work for them, so that others can see that there is NOT a magic bullet/magic plan they must follow. There are many ways! Thank you Lu Anne and Jill for sharing :)

I've been trying to control my weight for DECADES, with limited results.  My husband Mark and I tried Phen-Fen in the mid-1990s and countless diets, shakes, etc. over the years together.  The last thing was Sensa sprinkles, which I found disgusting (resold the unopened packs on eBay!)  But then I came across hHCG last April.

I know it's a bit bizarre by most medical standards, but I got inspired by the stories and began to have HOPE (absolutely vital, IMHO!) that this might work for us.  The original protocol involved daily hormone injections but there's a homeopathic spray that's easier and cheaper to use in conjunction with the diet.  There's an element of snake oil to this, and even though it's working like gangbusters for us, I still don't quite believe it's due to the spray.  But I can't argue with the results, and so we continue - even if it's ALL placebo-effect, it's helping us get a lot healthier.

The plan is basically to fat-load for a couple days, then melt-off excess fat through using the spray twice/day + a 500 calorie/day diet for 6 to 7 weeks - followed by 6 weeks of stabilizing at the new weight.  The spray is supposed to make the starving phase bearable - and I'm not sure what it actually DOES, since so much of my overeating is automatic/habit, and still difficult to control.  But the weight has melted off from the places it never did before: upper arms, belly, thighs... my waist went from 52" to 40" - Mark's went from 65" to 55".  It's advertised as dropping 1 pound per day, but for women it's more like 1/2 pound per day on the average - bearing in mind that most women don't have 100+ pounds to melt off!  On the first round, I dropped 39 pounds.  On the second, I dropped 25 but regained 5.5 pounds during the maintenance phase (because I cheated a bit!?)  Mark's now 80 pounds less since last August, and I'm 90 pounds less than May 2010.

The loading phase consists of your favorite heavy-fat, heavy calorie food with an emphasis on avocados, fatty fish, nuts - and plenty of them!  Plus whatever sweets, etc. you think you can handle.  The actual melting-phase of the diet consists of very plain, low-to-non-fat food in smallish portions: PROTEIN: chicken breast, white fish, lean beef, cottage cheese, egg whites + 1 yolk, shrimp, lobster - VEGETABLES: spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, celery, onion, asparagus, etc. - FRUIT: apple, strawberries, grapefruit - and grissini (thin breadstick) or melba toast.  (My friend Stephanie calls this phase Prison Camp, and sometimes that's exactly what it feels like.)  The maintenance diet is pretty much everything EXCEPT starch and sugar.  Supposedly following this protocol heals your hypothalamus and resets your appestat, but I don't know about that because it hasn't happened to me yet.

What's most encouraging to me is the change in our blood chemistry.  May 2010 I had very high triglicerides and cholesterol problems, and the results of my latest blood work has shown incredible improvement in both areas.  Plus I'm feeling better!  Mark's blood work is even better than mine, and he hasn't had any problems with any part of the diet, even though he's diabetic.  He DID have to cut way back on his hypertension meds, though - and his diabetic meds are down to less than a quarter of what they were  (he had to - his blood pressure and glucose levels were getting too low!!!)  His doctor was SHOCKED at his last checkup.

The best thing this particular version of HHCG has going for it (bear in mind there are many drops, injections and sprays out there to choose from!) is the website forum where many questions can be answered by folks who have a lot more experience with this product and protocol than I do...  I check in every day to get inspiration, post our weights and blog about our experiences.

Michelle, is that story by Marilyn one that is being posted on a lot of forums as spam? I have no idea, I just assumed she is a regular person sharing her plan. No? I always delete spam, but hadn't seen any other posts like that from this person.

Yep, cut & paste sales pitch.

No, I am a regular person, Michelle and Norma - I put a lot of thought into the rare times I respond to or post on anyone's blog and I don't appreciate your negative assumptions.  I read Lyn's blog every day, as I have for a year now.  I have no financial interest in HHCG and I don't shill for anyone else.  I shared my experience at Lyn's request because it HAS helped me drop 90 pounds in 7 months and keep them off for the past 7 months.  I haven't posted my before-and-after pix on my own website because weight-loss is not what that site is for:  I'm a professional musician and most of my visitors would not be interested in my weight struggles or victories.  Obviously YOU'RE not interested, either.

I've used Weight Watchers 2 times I've been at Lifetime- to get to a normal weight before being pregnant and a second time-after I had my daughter.

Various starts and stops along the way. One of them was a counselor (for non-weight) reasons who recommended the book "No Dieting: A Dry Drunk" by Becky Lu Jackson. That combo (eating only 3 meals with 2 planned snacks a day) combined with WW.

I realized WW by itself wasn't really working this time around and I tried various things for a short amount of time -

online nightly support chat

Tracking calories at Livestrong.com

I researched Medifast and was considering it late in 2010. Then in the spring of 2011, Take shape for life was part of my employers health fair. Having had researched it , I was ready to try and started Medifast early May 2011.

Something tells me that Medifast is the long term plan for me to follow, and add in the WW weekly meeting for weigh in (will be free for me when I reach goal weight), and combining tracking my calories at Livestrong during maintenance.

Seems like the perfect trifecta to me ;)

It's true that you learn things with each attempt. I think finding the right thing and/or combination of things helps you to be more successful for a longer time, if you build and retain your habits.

I've also noticed that it's often a combination 2 or more things that trigger me to want to overeat. Just sticking to the Medifast plan helps me ID what the triggers are and to plan how to deal with them better. That part had not happened with WW and calorie tracking.

Good topic.
