We have a dog and adopted a kitten before Christmas that someone dumped. It is going to be an outdoor kitty as my husband is very allergic. Right now she's been staying mostly in the garage... We also had a salamander for about 4 or 5 months, but it was released back to the wild after the snow was gone (got to have the cage back for frogs later this year....).
