Gift Cards as Presents

What do you think about giving gift cards for gifts? To impersonal? What about receiving them?

Our family is allll about gift cards. I don't think my dad has received a non-gift card in the past decade as a gift. I don't think they're impersonal to receive (and therefore impersonal to give) but my husband HATES them. Granted, he is the best gift giver in the universe... :)
