Our cloth diapers are one size (meaning that they have snaps that expand them to last from infancy through potty training) and they have a moisture wicking layer, covered by a waterproof layer of something called PUL (I have no idea what that stands for) and you put an absorbent liner inside.
We wash our own. We simply shake the solids out in the toilet (or use the sprayer if it's a little less solid) and then toss them in a diaper pail until we wash (about every 3rd day). They always come completely clean with no staining, but I have had other CDs that didn't. That's why we love the BumGenius, even if the velcro closure kind of irritates me. (I prefer snaps!)
My wash machine is perfect for them because it has one cycle that does a 15 minute soak, followed by a wash and 2 rinses. I had friends who tried to convince me that my water bill would be so much higher, but honestly it has not. We're still charged for 3 units of 1000 gallons if we use 2.5 or 3, so there has been no difference there.

I try to blog about my cloth diapering journey every now & then (am due for a new one)- here's the most recent: http://www.adventuresinbabywearing.com/search/label/cloth%20diapering
(I started cloth diapering late- on my 4th baby and when she was about 3 months old.) She's 16 months now and I STILL LOVE IT!!!!

Very interesting. Do you order them online or something? I have seen some at Babies' R' Us but they were just your old fashioned white ones, and we use those to make burp cloths!

Okay Stephanie- sorry to be a pest... but can you explain covers, inserts, etc.. to me? Why do you have to wear something over the diaper for some of the diapers? Aren't they supposed to be an all in one kind of deal?   And you have to do special washing instructions for them? I am not sure I am in for all of that. I have to admit that I am extremely curious now about cloth diapering... I love having disposable diapers, and I probably wouldn't ever entirely switch, but I think it would be a fun experiment to try cloth diapering...

I did order mine online, but Target also sells the BumGenius. (Not all stores have them IN the store, though.) I'm pretty sure I used CottonBabies.com.
Not all cloth diapers are all in one. For our newborn diapers, we used a brand called Kissaluvs that were made of this super soft fleece and they required a diaper cover. It just went on like a disposable diaper would, closing with velcro. Even the BumGenius that I have, you have to stuff the liner inside the "pocket." But there are cloths that are all in one that you don't have to stuff, and there are some diapers that come in different sizes rather than expanding through out the stages of babyhood.
You can pretty much make cloth diapering as complex or as simple as you want, depending on the types of diapers you get. 4 years ago, I never would have considered cloth (because I'm lazy!) but then one day about 6 months before I became pregnant, I saw the BG on a friends blog and I was hooked.

Lisa, do you put the liners in all the time? I was wondering that as my daughter had her second bowel movement of the day, and I have to admit, poop is the big thing I'm not looking forward to as far as CD'ing. How do you handle it?

Are the liners so you don't have to change the diaper every time they go to the bathroom? You just switch the liner out?

I too use cloth diapers for my daughter. I made the calculations and within 6 months the diapers were paid for. I bought 25, 3 in 1 BumGenius (they grow with the baby, due to the snaps. I calculated the price of diapers, wipes and water. For wipes I use cloth ones to and I mix water with a little olive oil and almond oil. Her butt is always nice and smooth, never had problems with rashes.  In terms of dealing with them I follow the exact same steps as Lisa does.   There is a Web site where you can try all types of cloth diapers. You pay a deposit that they will deduct once (and if ) you end up buying the diapers from them. I cannot recall of hand, but I can look for it if you are interested.

Oh, the liners that I am talking about are part of the diaper. There is this layer on the outside that wicks the moisture into the thing I was calling a liner. Maybe I should call it a soaker. In these diapers, his skin stays pretty much as dry as it would in a disposable diaper. (Not the case when we were using the Kissaluvs.)
However, we do have these flushable liners that we use when we remember. Their purpose is to keep the poop off the diaper (for the most part) and then you just plunk that into the toilet and voila! You still have to change the diaper if it's wet or soiled, but it makes clean up a little more convenient. I am pretty sure that we got those from cottonbabies, too, but I can't remember because we boutght 5 rolls when he was born and since we often forget to use them, we still haven't run out.

I use a mix of cloth diapers and disposables because my cloth diaper stash isn't big enough, lol.
I prefer the prefolds w/ a Thirsties cover the best, but I have more pocket diapers with inserts so we use those more (various brands but similar to the ones Lisa is talking about). My DH prefers the convenience of the pockets because you can change them just like a disposable (except you throw the dirty diaper into a pail to be washed as opposed to in the trash).
We started using them late w/ our 2nd DD (only 6 months or so ago, and she'll be 18 months in a few days), but we plan on using them exclusively (with the exception of long-distance travelling) when we have baby #3 in March.
When we originally wanted to just give cloth diapering a try w/o a full on commitment, I browsed my local Craigslist and bought a small stash there.
Now that we've decided to do it on a regular basis instead of supplemental, I buy my stuff from various online stores. For the prefolds and covers, I order mostly from Green Mountain Diapers. For the pocket diapers with inserts, I just ordered some of the SunBaby kind on eBay.
