Food Inc and a challenge

Besides my own blog I write at a blog called 'Not Dabbling in Normal' it a blog about living lives that are environmentally responsible, self-sufficient, and healthful.  We cover a very wide range of subjects, today I have posted about watching the movie 'Food Inc' and what my reactions were and the challenge we all face trying to feed our families healthy foods.

Starting March 1st I am going to try to avoid all commercially processed foods that I can make myself.  That means no chips, pasta, crackers...no spaghetti sauce, ketchup, canned beans. Out will be my rice milk and garden burgers.  Homemade peanut butter will replace that bought at a store, the list goes on...

I know it is not something that most are willing to try...but you are more than welcome to follow along with the progress of those of us taking the challenge... could be interesting!

And for you really adventurous types please join us and link up for the challenge! See ya March 1...

Kim, I moved to the country about 4 years ago and have slowly but surely been trying to learn to 'live off our land.'   I have 'saved' our fruit trees and did a small veggie garden last year...I haven't canned anything, but would love to learn how to at our local cannery.  I also want to start raising our own livestock...there is so much to learn....processed foods and even fresh foods from the store are not always the best for you...

I am going to follow you along in hopes of learning!

I do love your camel!  ;)

He is a rather funny guy...too bad he is NO help in the garden whatsoever!

I raise chickens for eggs and the rest of the rescued animals contribute with loads of poo!  Raising animals is lots of fun.d

You will find just loads of resources at Not Dabbling...we have many writers all with different areas of expertise. I'm glad you're going to follow along!

This challenge hits at what I would like to do for our family. I have no idea where to begin though!

that movie grossed me out.  makes me never want to eat meat, ever again!

another eye opener is the walmart one.  it's like, "high cost of low price," or something like that.

I am summoning the gumption to cut out wal-mart. This is basically a one horse town, but I have plenty of other of options.

We will be starting with the basics here.  Our blog has seasoned homesteaders who make everything from scratch to those of us who still get our ketchup our of a Heinz bottle.  You don't have to take the challenge if you just want to follow along and get tips for making basic changes...

Muliebrity, I didn't have the slightest when I moved here from the 'burbs.'

My goal is to learn something new about being more self-sufficient each year...Joe has already agreed to learn to butcher cows/chickens (no pigs)...that is so WAYYYY down the line though...I don't even have fencing up yet.

This year I will attempt canning my tomatoes....I had so much of them last year I didn't know WHAT to do with myself.
