Best lens for everyday use?

Would you recommend the Canon 18-135mm or the Tamron 18-75mm?  Thanks!

unless there's something I'm missing, i would go with the one with the larger zoom range.

is there a cost difference?

I have the tamron 17-50 F/2.8 lens.  This is what I recommend.  It costs around $450 and has a maximum aperture of 2.8 at all focal lengths.  This means it can produce beautiful blurry backgrounds easily and can take photos in low-light conditions.   It is my every day lens and I love the photos it takes.

I also have the 50mm F/1.8 lens, but you have to be very far away from subjects which is quite difficult indoors (not enough space) and it really does require you to move around a lot to take photos.

I don't think you would need the long 18-135 zoom range for everyday photos, plus unless you spent a LOT of money, your photos won't be as nice as on the 17-50.

The two I considered were similar in price.  I believe the Tamron is about $40 more.  Price wouldn't be a factor with that small a difference.  I haven't heard much about the Tamron 17-50, I'll look into that one also.  Thanks!

i second the 50mm 1.8.  it has it's limitations as far as zoom (it doesn't) but it's my lense of choice recently.

I have a similar 50mm 1.4 lens and love it.  I'm looking for something with a tad of zoom this time.  I think the 1.8 and 1.4 are similar though and I agree, fabulous lens!

you are skipping a major factor when choosing between those two lenses. speed. one of those is an f/2.8 and the other is f/3.5-5.6 (count that one as a 5.6 since it varies) . that is a major difference.  what you gain in speed on the tamron you give up in quality and distance which is why they are priced about the same.

the 1.8 and 1.4 are very different in that one (1.4) is a lot sharper and made of stronger metal components and the other (1.8) is plastic, known to break very quickly and is not as sharp.

i don't know that i would recommend any of these necessarily. what does your everyday shooting consist of? everyday shooting to one is  different than everyday shooting to another.

I typically shoot my children, portrait type things sometimes, scenery, pets also. Would that change your suggestion?

i guess it also depends on what you already have. i saw you have the 50mm 1.4. which camera do you have? also are there other lenses or a speedlite type flash that isn't built into the camera?

are you wanting to use only natural light, on camera flash, bounce flash, etc? what type of situations are you taking photos besides at home? are you outdoors a lot? if you are wanting to shoot a soccer game outside you probably want something that reaches farther than 50mm but if you are shooting basketball indoors you want something that is faster and also goes past 50mm.

I shoot primarily indoors with some outdoor shots.  I like the look of natural light much better but, do use the camera flash.  I have a T1i Rebel which works well in low light for me.  I do shoot some sports but, will be looking into a telephoto lens for that.  I primarily shoot pets,  children, and scenery shots.

I just realized when I read the first post I was thinking about the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. I can't find a Tamron 18-75mm at all. Maybe that was a typo? If not can you post a link so I can take a look.
